'Sir, I love you': On video, Andhra lawmaker slits wrist over poll ticket

A video of MLA from Puthalapattu assembly segment in Andhra Pradesh allegedly slitting his wrist over reports of being denied a party ticket and an audience with the party chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy has gone viral on social media.

Dalit lawmaker M. Sunil Kumar, a doctor by profession, shot a video of himself slitting his wrist with a blade and sent it to his party leader YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy.

In the 5-minute video clip, 50-year old Sunil is in tears and says, “Jagan sir, I love you so much. But I decided to end my life after I followed your footsteps for five years due to the talk of denial of ticket to me within the party”. He further adds, “I am sending you this video before my death”.

Kumar was rushed to a hospital in Madanapalli after the suicide bid. He was stated to be out of danger. His wife later told police that the lawmaker lost mental balance due to some adverse developments taking place within the party pertaining to his political future.

The MLA on Thursday reportedly tried to meet Jaganmohan Reddy at his Lotus Pond residence but failed to get an audience.

A party activist on condition of anonymity said, Kumar was sidelined in the YSRC since his failed attempt to defect to the TDP along with his party’s 23 lawmakers in 2016. The defection was foiled by party seniors from the district but he could not win the trust of the party after that.

Sunil is a first-time MLA elected from the reserved constituency on the YSRC ticket and the feedback collected by the party top leadership before the allocation of tickets reportedly suggested growing discontent against him within the party leading to search for alternative candidates.

A ticket aspirant from the constituency, wishing not to be named, said the suicide threats for tickets will set a bad precedent in politics. He hoped the party will take a wise decision on the selection of candidates.
