Police team sent to nab man in dowry case attacked by accused, kin

Agra: A four-memberpoliceteam that had gone to arrest a manaccusedof harassing his wife fordowryat a village in Etah district had no inkling that it would at the receiving end of blows by clubs and sticks. The team had to beat a hasty retreat. Reinforcements had to be called before two of the alleged attackers could be detained. By that time, the man wanted for demanding dowry had already fled. A search is on to nab him.
The incident took place at Nagla Jaee village under Jasrathpur police jurisdiction on Friday night.

The police team led by sub-inspector Suresh Singh along with constables Vijay Singh and Hirender Kumar and a homeguard went to the house of one Narendra (who goes by his first name) to arrest him. His wife had filed a dowry harassment case against him. The woman is now at her parent’s house in Farrukhabad.

According to police, the team had gone to arrest Narendra but his entire family and some villagers allegedly gathered together and attacked the policemen.

“One of our constables in the team sustained a severe head injury and has been admitted in hospital,” said SI Suresh Singh.
Officer Singh claimed, “Narendra and five members of his family were booked in the dowry harassment case. We went to arrest him but we were attacked by his family members.”
After the incident, a heavy police force was sent from a neighboring police station to the village and two men who had allegedly attacked the police team were detained. Police have also lodged a complaint against 15 people for attacking the team.
Meanwhile, Narendra has fled and a hunt is on to capture him.
